About Kanji-Japanese tattoo designs-
Japanese use 3 different kinds of characters.
Kanji
Kanji means Chinese letter or character. The script was invented by the Chinese and adopted by the Japanese around the middle of the 3rd century AD. Kanji are ideographs meaning that the whole character conveys a meaning rather than just a sound (as in the case of hiragana and katakana letters).
Hiragana
Hiragana, phonetic script much like English.
Katakana
Katakana, like hiragana, is a phonetic script much like English.
Katakana is used to represent foreign words which have been adopted into the Japanese language (loan words) and foreign names (personal and country names).
